Hey, iv been doing chin ups as part of my routine for the past 4 months and out of all the exercises I do I seem to progress least in chin ups. Is this normal or is there some way that I can increase the number of chins I can do?

That mind sound like a stupid question but it sounded right in my head!

Not at all. My advice is to keep doing them. Do them first in your workout. Not only will you have more energy and strength first off but I feel that they can really warm up the body for a nice hard back workout. Also each time you do them try to do at least one more rep per set than the last time. Good luck!

Good idea! Do them first. I never thought of that.

Thanks for your help and interest.

yo, noddy. i have a few small tips that'll add a few pullups for you.
1st - turn your hands around and do pullups (it might seem harder but after a few times it'll really be easier, you use more of your back with these)
2nd - spread your hands apart as far as you can (less distance you have to lift yourself)
3rd - lift yourself just so that your chin gets above the bar, no further
4th - as soon as your chin gets above the bar, drop as fast as possible (you'll use up energy if you come down slow)
5th - bang them out as fast as possible (no reason to waste energy doing them slowly)
6th - you might not need this but if you're swinging while doing them don't. keep yourself balanced, if you swing it makes it much harder to lift yourself up

Ive done chin ups as a warm up for my workouts for years. Im at a point now that im happy with so they are just for warming up now...but i can do more then most people when it comes down to repetitions. Heres what i do.

3 sets of 10 - or - 10-8-6 untill you can build to 10-10-10

you can do more after that if you wish...but i feel that is good for that paticular lift...there are many other things you can do to further strengthen your back with much focus.

I do have to say in opposition to tim24684
-do not go as wide as possible..only shoulder width or just outside.(reason being is this puts a tremendous amount of stress on the shoulders...not only that you cant get as good of a contraction in your back. Yes its less distance and wider will make a wider back...but save that for seated rows.
-do not drop down fast. its all about form and entensity. Yeah you may be able to do more that way...but thats only because your not working as hard. You will see huge results in your muscle develpment this way with all exersizes...your only cheating yourself if you dont. I usually do about a 2 count up and 2 count down.
-2sec up and 2 down. no your not going as fast as you can...but they still dont take that long..think of the progress you would make if you did that with every exercise...you might increase the amount that your doing...but your cheating your real potential

other then that i agree with the balance thing...everyone is always impressed when i do pullups...im in complet control of my body. The last set may make this difficult...but eventually youll get there. if your only doing 10-6-4 thats ok...next time go for 10-8-4 and so on.

After you can do this with good form and everything with only about 30-45 sec. rest in between, you should be able to do about 20-28 in one setting as fast as you can.

Also another option once you get to that point...and i think its good to wait till you do...but is to get a chain belt and add 10-20 pounds...until you get to that point again...then raise the weight to 30-40 or whatever. Ive seen guys do them with 45's before...i dont add on weight..but im not trying to get huge or anything. Im happy with being able to do my own weight that many times...and am proud to say that probably 80-90% of people that workout cant do that....not that they are not strong...just doing body weight stuff is just different.

Anyway hope that helps.

Noddy,

Only take Joey's advice if you want to increase the number of chin-ups. If you want to build muscle then take your time on the negative (coming down). You can disjoint a shoulder by letting yourself drop.
