cardio with weight training- HELP

I have quite a slim figure and i want to lose all the excess body fat and build up muscle. ive read somewhere that you cant build up muscle without losing fat, but i also read somewhere else that weight loss and muscle building conflict eachother, so its a choice of one or the other. is this true? should i combine cardio with weight training at the same time? thanks, i would appreciate your suggestions

I dont think weight loss and muscle build conflict each others. In fact i have been able to lose weight BECAUSE i have been weight lifting (oh and that nasty diet thing).

Weight lifting will build muscles and muscles will burn more calories then fat. So if you keep the same calorie input the muscles will eat up that calorie intake and take from your fat store to make up for the excess calories it needs.

From what I've learned on the situation, you'll bulk up less when cutting because you (should be) taking in less calories than you need.

Althought you'll build LESS muscle (you still will be building muscle), you need to include weight training-- because as zaboo said, it helps burn fat. Now when you're at your desired body fat %, you need to add more calories and those calories can be used to build larger muscle.

I'm no expert, but this is what I've concluded from my research.

If you want that lean, toned, hard body, resistance training is essential. If you just do cardio, you will just be a smaller version of what you are not. Cardio alone will do nothing to "shape" your body, simply burn calories and if your diet is sufficient, you will lose weight. However, as mentioned, if you are a "pear" now, you will simply be a smaller pear. And more than likely though may look fine with clothes, will be "soft" to the touch. Look at many cardio only folks, you see a skinny flabby person.
