I was just wondering if there were any cardio workouts that burn lots of calories rather than just running or walking? Just wondering what other pepole are doing to get into shape.

HIIT is your answer with cardio, but don't forget weights. This is actually your best fat burner over the long haul, the more lean tissue you develope, the more fat you burn even at rest. Don't make the mistake of just doing cardio. In fact, it will just make you "softer" if that is all you do. If you desire a tight toned body, then incorporate resistance training.

In additon to what bb1 posted, consider this. Training has many effects on how our bodies use food for energy so calories expended in a workout is not as important as the workouts effect on the body. The key is to condition the body through training so that it becomes more effective at using calories the other 23 hours of the day, after all which do you think is more productive, burning extra calories for 1 hour per day or burning extra calories for 23. Personally I'll take the latter! People focus to much on the amount of calories they burn training when the focus should be on what physical change in the body can be made during training. That is why it is necessary to consume adequate calories prior to training & leave the calorie deficit for less stressful times, after all whether your running or sleeping if you burn more than you eat you'll lose weight. Now as far as how training makes the body better at burning calories let me bore you with a little science. Cardiovascular improves the ability for both slow twitch muscle(endurance muscles) & smoth muscle (organs) to break down & use fat stores for energy production, thus increasing the amount of fat we burn each minute of every day. Now remember that fat is only one of the two prime energy sources, the other being carbohydrates, this is where weight training comes in. As muscles develope they are able to store & utilize more carbohydrates for energy, thus keeping those carbs from being turned into fat!. That is why, as bb1 said, the best method is the one-two punch of cardio + weights(along with a healthy diet of course) to lose the fat & enjoy a healthy, fit life!
