I started working out again about 2 months ago, mainly to lose weight. I strength train twice a week and like to do cardio either after my strength training sessions or on my off days.

My body seems to have adapted to the treadmill and it's pretty difficult/takes a long time to get my heart rate up to the fat burning zone. So, I'm using the elliptical now. However, my legs are frequently fatigued/recovering from my weight training sessions and it can be really tough to squeak out 30 minutes on the elliptical.

Am I harming myself and my progress by doing the elliptical with fatigued legs? Should I focus on building leg strength for now and go back to the elliptical later? If so, what do you recommend for cardio?

Thanks!

I started out on the bike when I got back into the gym. It did a great job in building up endurance in my legs...after about 3 -4 weeks I moved to the elliptical and just started out slow with using the elliptical for my 7 minute warmup to weight training, then for my cardio I did like 15 on the elliptical and 15 on the bike. Now I'm able to do 30-45 on the elliptical and am starting out the same process on the treadmill.

try a 3 day split lifting routine with the off days being your cardio days. You can get your heart rate up on the treadmill by just increasing the speed.
good luck and welcome to ft.

no you should be fine doing the cardio after the weight training for your legs. i typically stick with eliptical training after a leg day, and if theyve really been hit hard, just lower the intensity a bit
