Hi there, when I run on the treadmill for about 3 miles at 8:30 pace i get very bad shin splints, when I step off of the treadmill I can barely walk, it hurts like hell. I'm pretty pissed off about this too cause I just got $150 running shoes for this very problem! How can I reduce/stop these shin splints?

Work out your legs more with resistance training, and slow down your pace. The shoes play a big part, but the muscles need to be developped also. I remember those days.

is there any excersise that i can do to specifically help the splints? and regarding the pace, I get no pain whatsoever on a 9 min mile and i found it too easy to run, so i took it upto 8:30 and man thats when the pain started...should I have worked myself up there instead of doing a sudden change?

Yes! Work yourself up. But first you will have to take 3 or more weeks to recover from shin splints. the problem with shin splint type injuries is that you think they have healed before they really have fully healed. Try biking, stationary upright or recumbent, try the elliptical, anything that won't be impactive, and let your shins rest.

Ease into any new amount of running.

Good luck!

I have that same problem and have all my life. A buddy who was in the Olympics as a runner told me to warm up my legs really good before. He even had me ice the shins before now thats a pain but I finally got on the treadmill took my time warming up and then slowly begin the process of the workout. He helps so much even though it took me about 20 mins to get the legs warm enough. But otherwise its like your bone is coming out of the leg and thats not a good happy feeling. :) Good luck. I will also add that your 150 shoes...did they fit them for you? I had no idea that theres a proper way to buy a shoe for our different types of feet but there are. Sometimes they add an arch sometimes they have one of the shoes built up/down more etc. just for our feeties :) and if youve already done this then try the warmup. I lived with shin pain all my life but the warmup proper shoe fit and weight loss as been GREAT in helping with that.

You can help by doing calf raises, standing, sitting, and reverse standing. And Ditto on asimmers advice.
Like CC says the shoes are very important. The heel and ball have to withstand your bodyweight. If your heavy, the heel must be able to withsatnd your weight. I hope you told the shoe person what you use them for. I usually get 300km out of a $69.00cdn shoe.

Try it, but shin splints are one of those things that are still there, even when you feel better. if they are severe, you ned to let them heal.
How old are you? If you are younger and very healthy otherwise, you may heal faster. But try cross training with some non-impact cardio for thre weeks and imagine how much stronger you will be when you get back to running.:)

Shin splints are very common among the flights over here when we train in the mornings... The Air Forces advice is extactly what everyone else has been emphasizing....rest them, and when they are gone make sure to get a good strech before prolonged runs....and try to run on soft surfaces (i.e. grass, patted tracks, ect.)

Then you should heal pretty quickly, 3 weeks, tops. But you could still do biking, elliptical (if it doesn't aggravate it), swimming, try some different types of cardio - it will be good for you besides letting your shins rest.

I had the same problem when I tried our treadmills. I always run on the track they have. The tread mill is hard and has no give, but everytime I run on the track im fine.

When I had trouble running, it was because of lower body work. Biking as a method of rest further harmed my legs. At least it taught me how to recognize the symptoms of overtraining, and how to overcome it (taking some time off).

Are you sure it's shin splints? I had the same kind of pain and it was stress fractures, maybe get it checked out before you start running again.
