I had a sore throat for two weeks, which developed into bronchitis about 9 days ago. The worst of it seems to be over, but I am still definitely not 100%. I haven't worked out in 12 days!! I missed 5 days of work, and returned yesterday, but my shifts seem to last forever (even if I'm just there 3.5 hours!) When can I go back to working out? I'm just barely surviving with the effort it takes to go to work. This is not like me! HELP!

It takes a long time to get in shape, and it also takes a long time to lose fitness too.

Having 2 or 3 weeks off will not hurt your fitness level that much, and certainly a lot less than trying to workout when you are sick.

The usual rule of taking time off if you are sick below the neck (i.e. bronchitis) is a good one. Wait until you´re feeling up to it, don´t force yourself to go back too early.

Thanks princess. I have lost about 5 lbs., and I'm sure at least half of that is muscle, if not all of it.:(

Hopefully I can start back next week. I am looking to lose weight, but not that kind of weight!

The weight loss may well be water. Even if you are drinking as much as usual, if you aren´t eating as much, you will be taking in less water. You can also lose a considerable amount of fluid when you have a fever, through sweat loss.

Keep your fluid intake up, and try to keep eating regularly.

Thanks...I think it was water, fat, and muscle. My arms and chest are visibly smaller, but so is my stomach, so it's a combination of all that.

For the first time since Super Bowl Sunday, when I got sick, I was feeling like working out tonight, but I decided against it because I'm travelling to Vegas for the weekend for a conference. Figured I should rest a little bit longer, since this was the first time in awhile I felt OK. But I will be back by next Tuesday for sure!

When you are sick, you will look flatter because your muscle tonus is decreased, you should see it come back fairly quickly when you get back to lifting.

Bronchitis is one of those things you really want to get over before returning to working out, it is so easy to relapse.

I feel for you, there is an epidemic respiratory virus going on here and we are just passing around from family member to family member...
