While having my first baby, my doctor said I broke my Tailbone (sorry don't know the medical name) and ever since then when I do any sqats of any kind, whether on the Smith machine or seated sqats it aches and hurts. I really want to work the muscles that this exercise provides. Are there any variations or am I just doomed to not being able to do these?

Did you ever have any type of rehab for the injury? How long ago was it broken?

tailbones are notorious for causing long lasting residual pain and problems. They never heal very well because there is alwasy weight on them and them muscles around them are hardly ever still.

Can you do the range of motion for squats without any weight without pain?

Have you had the tailbone xrayed - has it healed or do you have a chronic fissure-type crack in it that is aggravated by the push and pull of your muscles when squatting?
So many different muscles have origins/attachments on the pelvic bones, that is one of the problems with getting it stable so it can heal fully.

I think you may want to have it re-evaluated by a specialist and get their advice on how to deal with it, it may be you need to avoid certain activities until it has healed more.
