Is it true that how you breathe when doing situps can influence your eventual shape,or something like that? If so, how should I breathe - in when sitting up or out when sitting up? How does this work for other ab workouts like leg raises? in on the raise or out on the raise?

During the contraction part I breathe out, and then breathe in on the way down.... same with leg raises, as I raise my legs, I breathe out, and in when I lower my legs.

but if you breathe a certain way does that not make your abs bulge outwards? I'm going for the flat look.

Hmm.. interesting question... I don't think it will... I think it will only make your abs bulge out if you have a bad diet. Breathing gets the oxygen to the body, not so sure it would have any effect on what your abs will look like.

sounds to me like your aren't breathing right...Your abs should flatten as you exhale/push all of the air out of your lungs...I would look into correct breathing techniques using the diaphragm.
