I was in the gym today, and right after cardio I went to go take a crap. I know that sounds funny. But when I was done, I noticed that there was a pretty big amount of blood in the toilet. I wasn't constipated, in fact it came out pretty well. What is this a symtom of? It's not very exciting seeing blood in the toilet. Makes me worry. The only thing that I could think of that would have caused this to happen would be that I was holding it in while I was doing cardio. I had gas, and I just kinda held it in. I only had about 5 min. to go anyways. I've had blood in the toilet before, but not nearly as much as I did today. Actually twice today. It happened again when I got home. But I do admit that those times that I had a little blood come out, I was constipated. But not these times. Any information would be apreciated. Thanks. Oh by the way, I'm 15, and I know that this is an early age for this to happen. Could it be hemorroids?

Thanks for the quick post Tim. I think that's what I should do. I've been doing research, but I can't really find anything that would cause this to happen. It says that maybe alchohol can cause this, which I don't do. And many other things that can cause this. Then It also says ways to prevent or cure this. I already do the things it says to do. Things like eating vegatables and fruit, and exercising with at least 20 min. 4-5 times a week. I don't know. Anybody know anything about this?

I didn't get to see what Hec said I feel I'm missing something. But I went to the restroom this morning, and I'm not bleeding anymore. I think that this is a good sign. Should I still go and see a doctor? I already told my parents. It is kinda embarrasing but they need to know. They said if it continues to happen, then they'll take me to the doctor.

Blood in the stool can originate from anywhere along your digestive tract, from mouth to anus. It may be present in such small amounts that you cannot actually see it, but is only detectable by a fecal occult blood test. When there IS enough blood to change the appearance of your stools, the doctor will typically want to know the exact color to try to estimate the site of bleeding. To make a definite diagnosis, however, endoscopy or special x-ray studies are needed.
A black stool usually means that the blood is coming from the upper part of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. This includes the esophagus, stomach, or first part of the small intestine. Blood will typically appear like tar after it has been exposed to the body's digestive juices. Stomach ulcers caused by ibuprofen, naproxen, or aspirin are common causes of upper GI bleeding. Maroon-colored stools or bright red blood usually suggest that the blood is coming from the lower part of the GI tract (large bowel or rectum). Hemorrhoids and diverticulitis (inflammation of an abnormal pouch in the colon called a diverticulum) are the most common causes of lower GI bleeding. However, sometimes massive or rapid bleeding in the stomach causes bright red stools. Consuming black licorice, lead, iron pills, bismuth medicines like Pepto-Bismol, or blueberries can also cause black stools. Beets and tomatoes can sometimes make stools appear reddish. In these cases, your doctor can test the stool with a chemical to rule out the presence of blood. Brisk bleeding in the esophagus or stomach (such as peptic ulcer disease), can also cause you to vomit blood. Common Causes: Upper GI tract (usually black stools): * Bleeding stomach or duodenal ulcer * Gastritis * Esophageal varices * Mallory-Weiss tear (a tear in the esophagus from violent vomiting) * Trauma or foreign body * Bowel ischemia (a lack of proper blood flow to the intestines) * Vascular malformation Lower GI tract (usually maroon or bright red, bloody stools): * Hemorrhoids * Anal fissures * Diverticular bleeding * Intestinal infection (such as bacterial enterocolitis) * Vascular malformation * Inflammatory bowel disease * Tumor * Colon polyps or colon cancer * Trauma or foreign body * Bowel ischemia (a lack of proper blood flow to the intestines) |

I would not concerne your self at the moment with tumors and colon cancers you realy are very young and all though possible it is very unlikely that these will be the cause of youe bleeding you are no where near risk age for this. If the thought of these is keeping you from the doctor then dont let it. There are many reasons that we can bleed from our back passage and all though distressing at the time the cause is usually minor, do you suffer abdominal pain and do you usually see the blood after exercise, if so it is possible for the straining during your workout to make you bleed if you have week membrains or piles as was mentioned some runners get blood in there urine but don't be afraid to go to the quack I doubt its any thing sinister but if you dont get what ever it is treated it could later on lead to somthing more serious. You can not receive an acurate diagnosis over the web like this Go and see the doc. best wishes.

Thanks for all the advice everyone. Ever since that day, it hasn't happened at all again. Well at least nothing that I can see. I have forgotten about it. When it happened, that was the only thing that was on my mind. Maybe I should still go see a doc. Maybe it is because of the straining in the workout. I'm thinking that is the only thing that could be the cause. I do get constipated a lot thought. I have been eating Fiber 1 cereal for breakfast every morning, but it seems to not be working. It has 14 grams of fiber per serving. I eat one serving in the morning, and then I snack on it throughout the day so I think I get in enough fiber, but then again it's obvious that I don't since I continue to be constipated. Any advice on how to become DEconstipated <---I guess. Thanks again.

I'd say to go to the doc.
Also eat more fiber. Sometimes this happens when the stool you have is hard or abnormally shaped. Like too big around to come out. Don't worry too much about it. Like it was posted above, it's very unlikely to be cancer or a tumor or anything else that would be really harmful. Also, be gentle when you wipe. If you have a tear down there then the bleeding won't stop till it heals. So pat the area after going to the bathroom. You might wanna get some of those wet wipe things which would make sure that you stay cleaner with less contact. |

Are you using creatine? if so this can soak up water from your bowl. This is qite common during loading. If this is the case dont take a whole scoop at a time split it up through out the day and dont load let it enter your muscles over time after four weeks come off the creatine and consume more meat this should be adequate enough to keep your creatine topped up.

My wife switched from fiber to a stool softener. This allowed everything to come out just fine. Ended her constipation problems. The doctor told her that the fiber was sliding right on down and sitting there in the constipated "traffic jam". The stool softeners took care of that "traffic jam".
Try one, you'll like it. -------------- --Click here to insert a clever message-- Jonathan |

At first I was worried about what has happened to cause this, but I'm not so worried anymore. Stools are going smoothly, and I have no more blood in the toilet, so I don't think that I'm going to go see the doctor anytime soon.

Blood is bad in the stools. It may be true that darker blood usually more concerning, but large amounts of blood are bad as well. It never hurts to get it checked out.
