I dunno what it means, but the tounge apparently can indicate a lot of health issues.

I go to an acupuncturist, in fact I'm going tonight, and she always checks the tounge. I suspect there are some sites on the net that can tell you what it means. It's a form of Chinese Medicine.

If I remember tonight, I'll ask her and reply later on....

Yeah! Thanks Tim. I did a bit of research on the net as you suggested. (I took 2 Pepto Bismol tablets before going to bed last nite!)

Pepto bismol contains bismuth which when combined with the small traces of sulfer found in the intestinal tract creates bismuth-sulfide, a compound that indeed causes darkening of the tongue. As far as the red wine goes, I think it may be the dark color of the wine that stains your tongue black. Try brushing your tongue after drinking red wine! (P.S. I am not a doctor; I had the same problem with pepto bismol and found this info through online research!)

Sandy, I'm glad you found out what the problem was. I was beginning to believe that you were somehow related to my Chow dog.

Thanks for the info though.

I was at the acupuncturist last night... she says a black tongue isn't the worst thing you could have on it... the worst is when it looks like a desert... all cracked and dry... gack!!! It sounds as though a black tongue can be fixed pretty easily, but the cracked one.. not so good...

But, it sounds as though the Pepto did it...!
