I am thinking about getting off the pill once and for all. I am just curious if anyone out there who has gotten off the pill, and didn't take any other type of hormonal type of bc, can tell me what effects it had, if any, on their routine and body composition. I'm 41, have been on the pill for 20 years, and would like to just quit.

I have the IUD and it is great. I have heavier periods and a little more cramping but other than that, no other effects. Talk with your doctor to see what they recommend.

I stopped taking the pills in November last year. I got so tired of it and I noticed for my competition it was harder for me to loose the thigh fat....... ):
Anyway, I stopped (didn't have any problems with any side effects) and then got another thing called IMPLANON which is a small implant (in my left arm).
No estrogen but some progesteron. I feel absolutely fine with it..... No weight gain, no head ache, nausea or what so ever.

Kelly...I'm not clear what your reasoning for wanting to get off the pill is, however I felt compelled to post that I was never able to take bc pills. My body never got over the usual 3 month period of adapting to them. I finally took the chance of getting the Depo shot (which lasts 12 weeks per shot) and have not experienced the usual side effects I once did from the pills. Infact just the opposite, weight loss and minimal periods w/out any cramping.

Best of luck.

Take care.

Thanks for the info everyone...I just feel like I've been on it too long, 20 plus years. I'm 41, married, don't want more kids (so I know I'll have to do something,) I just feel that my body might like a change to something else. I have my "yearly appt." in May, so I'll talk it over with the doc.
Thanks again!

I'm also using an IUD and just love it! But I experience the same side effects as you roni0906. But at least I'm not putting hormones in my body!

Coming in late on this, but wanted to add another vote for the IUD. I've had one for almost five years with no problems, not even cramping or heavier periods. I've never been able to take hormones either so I love my IUD.

i think it really just depends on the woman. everybody has diff chemistry. i've tried both the pill and depo. depo made me gain lots of weight and as soon as i got off, i lost it all. as far as the iud, i've never tried it, but i have friends who say it's the best type of bc they've ever used. so i'll be sure to try it after my next child. the good thing about it (unlike depo) is it's reversable. they can take it out b4 the 5 or 10yr time period has elapsed if you don't like it. even though depo is only 3 months, it's a long time if you start gaining weight rapidly. stopping the pill made my sex drive sky rocket and my periods irregular. good luck what ever you choose
