Boo. My gym at work just did the electrical impedence body fat testing. 21%. Yuck yuck yuck.

Augh. So now, I'm thinking I should get a BF scale so I can get an average for now and then track it over time (especially as I'm starting to monitor my diet!).

What scale do you have? Any suggestions? Do I need to worry about the "athlete" setting on some of the Tanita scales...obviously not now (blah.), but I'd also like to let my boyfriend use it and he's probably <10%.

The electrical impedence testing is pretty inaccurate, as are the scales. Too many pretest protocols and variants.
Find a trainer that isn't so lazy and get them to do it with skinfold calipers.

That is a good question. I have been working out weights and cardio 6 days a week for the last month, as well as following a very strict diet. The other day I weighed myself against my better judgment and my weight hadn't changed a bit. Everyone keeps telling me muscle weighs more than fat, blah blah blah, but all I see is that damn number. At this point I was going to follow their advice and throw the scale away, but perhaps a body fat scale would be a better solution.

Does anyone know how accurate they are or what the best one to get is?

Fom my experience asimmer is right on with her opinion. I have a Tanita scale, I can get 7 different readings if I test myself 7 different times in the day.
The variances are due to changes in our body. What you must take in to consideration, is when you test yourself, empty bladder, no heavy metals on your body, and empty stomach.
They recommend you take a reading every day for 7 days at the same time, then take the averge. I find the reading I get is a 1% difference from the one on here, and about 5% with calipers. All in all, I use it for a guide.

You can get free calipers if you order some supplements from Netrition. Or, you can purchase them...they're pretty inexpensive nowadays.

I just bought a fat caliper online for $9.99 and that included shipping. It's cheaper and more reliable (if you measure the same each time) than a scale.
