Most of your battle is going to be with your diet! Once you have conquered that, then you can concentrate on working out. Fill out your profile and tell us more about your training, diet, etc.
Good luck! -------------- **_Robert_** Pain is temporary; glory is forever! |

rpacheco is right, exercise will help burn calories, but if you don't eat a healthy diet you won't see much in the way of results.
If it really is a beer-belly, then you know the first thing to cut out, eh? -------------- Challenge + Consistency = Results |

I have quite a good diet, balanced meals, 2-3 a day, but I suppose I do drink a lot. I have not exercised in any way for about 3 years now which didn't help. Im not bothered about being super fit or anything, just toned, at least in some way.
Do you think regular workouts at the gym are a good start? |

Regular workouts are a must, as well as some aerobics ( running, xtrainer, etc. ) I've been battling my beer belly for years, and I don't even drink ! Good Luck

well how do you have a beer belly...hmmm...the thing is....i have friends, who drink with me, and as much as me...who dont suffer from a gut, because they exercise...and thats the only difference, (of course, they never let themselves become as unfit as me!) how many units a week would anybody recommend, and ill tell you how it compares to my current amount)
ps...is it true, that situps, crunches etc...only build the abs under the fat, and dont really help to pinpoint it and burn it off? |

Could you relax with 3 beers on the weekend? Or could you switch to light beer to start out with? The more you cut out, the healthier you will be.
Try eating five small meals a day, that will boost your metabolism. Do you have a highly stressful job? Cortisol, the stress hormone, contributes directly to abdominal fat storage, so learning to relax and destress in healthier ways would be beneficial as well. Yes, it is true, there is no such thing as spot reducing. Your body loses fat in its own predetermined way, some people lose a layer all over gradually, others lose from one area faster than others. When your fat seems jigglier and more liquidy under your skin, you know you are getting rid of it. I warn my female clients that their fat will look worse as they shed it, they don't beleive me until it happens. Gradually work up your level of fitness and make small, healthy changes to your lifestyle. It will all add up and you will get fitter and lose fat. But you do want to do abdominal work for the strength and to have a nice sixpack to show off once you do lose the weight. Good luck! |

On a more serious note: Check with your Doc. because diabetic conditions among others can cause a "pregnant" looking stomach. I would make sure nothing physically was wrong first. ============ Quoting from daredevil9987: hey all, im 20 yrs old and approx 6ft 3, and weigh 210lbs. i am not fat as such, but just have a huge pregnant looking beer-belly. i have joined the gym but am not really sure how to burn off some of this gut. any help is appreciated. ============= |

Honestly? I'll never give up my beer but have cut back on it so hopefully all this work at the gym will pay off along with my moderation. i'm 25 and graduated college 2 years ago and got a bigger beer belly. since the beginning of the year, i've only drank twice, and needless to say, some of my pants are starting to need a belt. now if i could start eating right...

Eating right is always a better and healthier choice but I would visit your doctor to check for diabetic conditions as well. Just an overall phsical would be good and then possibly talk with him/her about your nutritional habits or lack of. Good luck!!! :)
