Are there any exercises I can do that will simulate wide grip chin ups I workout at homee and at present I only have free weights and bench. suggestions greatly appreciated.

Do you have a lat attachment on your bench? If not, then the only one I can suggest would be bent over rows.

Your nearest school, park or playground should have some monkey bars for you to be able to do these.

Thanks, I was looking at my program for tomorrow and all my exercises are on a machine except one arm rows what do you do in that case?

you just have to subsitute the exercies you can't do with exercises that work the same muscles. look under exercise resources

Thanks lumina20, I looked and found one for each group. Don't believe I will get the desired effect though.

Why is that? what type of exercises do you have picked out? For back if all you have for weights is a bar try bent over rows or one arm rows.

yea thats what I have, but my exersice is for width, rows seem to be for thickness or am I being picky?

Rows work the lats and yes for thickness, but will work for width as well

Doug, the rows will work for both. Don't forget t-bar rows as well. And, if you ever get to a gym, do cable rows.

Doug - Since you're just using bb's and db's, load up one end of your bb with whatever weights you're going to use. Put the empty end against a wall or something to hold it in place. What you wind up with is a narrow grip rowing device.

Doug, ft has an excellent resource at your disposal. From the main menu, choose ft Exercise Resources, then Muscle Targeting. From there, just choose the specific muscle group you're interested in and you'll be able to see all of ft's exercises.

Thanks for all the input guys. I must not be doing these Wrong seems I feel more in my arms than back. Should I use a lighter weight, say maybe 2 wks to laern form then go to my one rep max?

Concentrate on your form. Squeeze your back muscles at the top of the movement. You'll feel the work on your arms, too, but the key is to exhaust your back muscles. You don't have to get to your 1-rep max on every exercise. If you stay around 80-95% of your 1-rep max, that should be enough for hypertrophy.
