Will back extensions help my lower back pain? I know that when I am consistently working my abs, the pain in my back is very minimal; but I am wondering about back extensions. Also, can I do back extensions on my stability ball?
THANKS! |

Thanks for replying Charlie. Where do I find the fitness resources? I'm new to the site and still trying to find my way around.

click health resources, then fitness resources. Click on a muscle group. Scroll down the specific exercise. click on the exercise for a description and pix.
If you set up an FT exercise plan you can click on the proscribed exercise and get the same thing. -------------- I think they should give a grammy to the guy who makes an easy to open CD Charlie

Found it! Thanks!
I don't think I'll try these with weights for a while though. Hey Hec, I'm a pro...just not at bodybuilding. |

I have a bad lower back and never, ever miss doing extensions. My back always feels great afterwards. Make your movement fluid and deliberate.-------------- If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything.... bb1fit@freetrainers.com |

Back Extensions are very good, for the lower back,it allso works the Hamstrings and Glutes, when you can so thirty or so try putting a dumbbell behind your head and doing them for extra resistance.

BB1,
Do you do extensions daily? I'm doing them on my stability ball and I may do them while laying on the floor. Just started today. |

No, I do them only on back days or if I feel a twinge in my lower back, I will do some right away. Again, make the movement slow and deliberate. The idea here is not how much weight you can lift, it is simply strengthening and toning the lower back muscles.-------------- If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything.... bb1fit@freetrainers.com |

Well, trust me...as a beginner, I won't be using weights for quite some time while doing extensions. I AM looking forward to strengthening my back though. We bought new mattresses a couple of years ago because of my back pain and it did help some. But once I quite working out, the back pain came back.
Thank you for your reply. |

One note on extensions, it seems common practice because they are called hyperextensions to "hyperextend"...try to come up to parallel only(back and legs in line) if you are using a hyper bench for instance. Though it will feel good maybe to go farther, it may indeed be counterproductive in the long run.-------------- If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything.... bb1fit@freetrainers.com |

Back extensions (Machine especially)are excellent to train lower back/hamstrings....over the years this exercise has transformed my back into my strongest body part and tripled my deadlift....I love it so much that I superset it with deadlifts after I finish doing them....so I suggest you start doing them...go heavy....rep them out....you know you did them hard/well when you feel nauseous...lol
for good lower back development/as well as whole back...try doing deadlifts, romanian deadlifts, stiff legged deadlifts(these build size), goodmornings, hyperextensions, lower back machine, etc....they all work.... stick to 6-8 reps to build some size, and use higher reps 12-20+ reps(go by feel...see what FEELS right)....to build some endurance...

I am sure that she appreciates your comments, but following the thread, I do not believe she is quite at this stage. :)

Thank you so much Menace, but bb1 is correct. I'm not yet at that stage. :) Hopefully, I'll get there. Although, I don't think I'd care for feeling nauseous.
The last time I did deadlifts, I must have done them incorrectly because it seemed like it hurt more than it helped. |
