If you have been following Atkins for a couple of months it seems like you should have lost a little more than 14 lbs by now. How clsley have you followed the program and what is your carb intake per day? To lose weight you should be taking in less than 40 carbs per day. While you are on the induction phase of the diet you should take in less than 20 carbs per day for the first two weeks. After that, you should gradually increase carbs by no more than 5 per week until you achieve the 1 to 2 lbs loss per week.
I know that while I am on Atkins I feel better, am not hungry, tend to fixate on the foods that I can have, lower my blood sugar and blood pressure as well as my weight. The noly down side is that you must commit to counting carbs for the rest of your life or you will regain all your weight again. Personally, I have found that a low carb, moderate fat, low calorie regimen to work the best with my body type. |

i lose nearly every ounce of energy on atkins induction.
i sleep on a clothes line easily. i don't get hungry. i get craving days and binge on chips and chocolate- but that's better than before when these things were a daily binge. i lose weight readily in that first 2 weeks up to 7 pounds. after that i lose faith as it seems to stabilise and weight drops off not at all or a pound only a fortnight. so then i add the carbs gradually- i can't as i crave them if i eat them and any weight loss will be back within 4 months.. it still is a willpower thing which i must be slightly lacking as i find in cycles like above- i am losing basically 2 pounds in 3 to 4 monthly cycles- i mean like 2 permanent lost pounds butit aint no easier except each time i go thru' the months i seem to re-educate myself to a better lower appetite and proper five fruits/veg a day and all the golden rules to healthy eating seem clearer and easier to achieve. the atkins diet itself sucks but even so i've found it a useful tool to control appetite and food choices. Nothing else was going to control that especially not carb based diets.. diet is a dirty word anyway- i know the best habits are constant healthily choices of all foods- i just eat too big a quantity, well i used to, i think atkins is a temporary tool to teach you quantity and not a way of life. |

I did the Protein Power diet and lost a lot of weight. It's similar to Atkins.
I tons of energy and didn't gain it back so I was pleased. I think it is a good way to get a jumpstart on weight loss, but when taken to extremes can be unhealthy and counter productive. |

Yes, always check with you doctor first.
I respect your opinion, but disagree that it is bad for everybody Neov, my doctor advocated it in my situation. My blood pressure went down to normal and so did my cholesterol while I was on it. Of course, I followed the plan precisely and added in my good carbs at a steady rate and exercised every day too. That is a big part of low carb dieting that people wanting to be on the "fast track" overlook. |

What is Atkins?-------------- You can cover up the flaws on your body, but there is no hiding a flawed personality. |

Atkins is all the low carb crap that's been going around. The diet itself isn't that bad (though I don't believe in it), but people have made so many misconceptions and eat all this meat or no carbs at all. I think it is definitely the wrong way to go and will never do it again, but you do lose weight (even though a lot of it's water and muscle). A true powerlifter or athlete should NEVER do Atkins.-------------- I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is the moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle-victorious. --Vince Lombardi "Decide what you want, decide what you are willing to exchange for it. There was a program on TV in the UK last year that randomised people to one of 4 different types of diet and studied them over the course of (I think) a year. I'm not sure it was the most scientific of studies, but the weight loss in all 4 groups was roughly the same from what I can remember.
The one thing I clearly remember was the guy who lost about 40 lbs on Atkins. When they looked at his body fat% approximately 1/3 of his weight loss was LEAN tissue. I think atkins has taught us useful info about the role of protein in appetite control, but the basic premise that carbs have to be controlled is wrong and really irritates me. High GI carbs need to be controlled, yes, but low GI carbs should be included in everyone's diet. I know people argue that atkins allows fibrous veg etc, but if you accept that these carbs are ok, and you insist on going on a diet, why not use the GI diet, which makes much more sense? |

I don’t post much and am fairly new to this site but I would like to chime in on this one. I agree a true Atkins diet is not a healthy one ( to much fat). I myself modified it slightly and lost 125lbs in 18 months. 290 to 165. I did the by going low fat high protein with moderate to low carb intake (about 150 grams a day) and absolutely no refined sugars or junk food of any kind. After I had lost about 70lbs I started weight training and cardio. My weight has been stable since Jan 2004
