Just curious to see what people think about going Atkins? It supposed to be great for losing fat, ive done some research, but getting all your calories basically from meat and eating saturated fat, just seems like it can cause serious problems. Anybody have any experiences with it?? I tried it for this past weekend, I got really tired and had a bad headache, then i gave up on it had some sweet potatoes, vegetables, and now the headache is gone.

My dad did it for a few months. He did lose weight, but after he got off of it, it came back pretty fast. I tried a high protien, low carb/fat diet over last summer, and I was exhausted and cranky all the time.

I don't think the Atkins diet is a very healthy choice, though other people would argue that. Getting your calories from nothing but meat and fat can't be good for you. Aside from that, cutting carbs entirely is a pretty drastic step. I mean you don't just eat carbs for energy. The foods you eat also contain important vitamins and minerals essential for your body. I have also heard that once you get off the atkins diet you can kiss everything you suffered for goodbye.

I'm no diet expert though. But I believe a healthy diet and exercise is the best choice for anyone that wants to lose weight.

Do a search of the forum, there is a lot of discussions about it. To sum it up, if your willing to work out and do cardo, I dont think its the way to go.

The Atkins diet is a good diet if your goal is simply weight loss. It is not a bodybuilders diet by any means. Very little energy involved, with the lack of glycogen from carbs. You eat some, but not to the degree it is needed to fuel a good workout.

ive been doing the atkins diet since january and lost 50lbs without any form of exercise. now im starting a work out program so i will increase my carb intake accordingly. i think its a great way to lose excessive weight. i feel great and have the same energy level i had before the diet.

I tried the Atkins for a total of two days. I was attempting to strip down some body fat from 12.9% body fat to 7%. I had so little energy that I couldn't stay on it for more than two days. Lifting weights HURT, and hurt BAD.

bb1 is right when he says it's NOT a bodybuilder's diet by any means.

The Atkins diet saved my life!!!!!!
Since I was 30 years old I adopted the recommended 'healthy" diet of little red meat and veggies with chicKen and fish for protien. I got so weak I could not even work out at the gym. I had heard so many terrible things about Atkins that I was sure that I was aging and just unhealthy and I had no idea that the "healthy"
recommended diet was absolutly killing me!!!!
I grew up on an Atkins diet even before it was invented and no one in my family was ever overwieght. We ate massive helpings of red meat 3 times a day. Thinking this was horrible, I stoped and switched. I was the only one who was overweight in my fammilly after that, dispite being compltely iron willed about my diet regiment. A high carb meal makes my head spin and I cannot leave the chair.
What a miracle- I tried Atkins and within a week I was at the gym every day and feeling like superwoman. At 43 I put most 20 year old girls to shame. My husband has had the same remarkable results and I have never seen him have more energetic in all our married years.
We are all different and there are some that may thrive on the vegetarian diet or a low fat diet, but for me it is the fast lane to the grave.
