There was a section on the show last night about the myths about exercise. Some of the myths were that muscle burns more calories, moderate exercise can help you lose weight, and others basically saying that for weight loss, diet is the only way to go. 1 lb of muscle in fact only burns 6 calories a day more.

Muscle doesn't burn calories. It burns fat. Cardio burns calories. That's what I've always been told. I didn't see the show, but it sounds like someone trying to put a play on the words for their own benefit. Who was the "expert" saying these things?

It's amazing how any theory can be "supported" when a premise is taken out of context...
The science is that the more muscle tissue a person has, the more fuel he needs in order to function, just like the size of a car engine: a 426 Hemi needs and uses more gas than a Chevy 350. Fat and food is stored energy, like auto gas, while muscle is an engine (though, in a catabolic state, the muscle tissue can become fuel, but that is another topic!).
Besides, even if diet alone was the only way to lose fat, look at all of the other benefits you get from exercising: increase in bone density; muscle and connective tissue less prone to injury; a stronger heart and lung system, etc...

That is the type of response I was expecting. I just remembered another "myth" they made reference to...fat weighing less than muscle. According to the fitness expert on there they weigh the same.

Well actually they do, a pound is a pound BUT muscle takes up much less space.

Exactly right. It comes down to weight. More weight you have, higher the metabolism. Obviously muscle weighs more therefore, your metabolism will increase and that leads to a faster caloric burn.

actually I was on the threadmill when I watched it :) it wasn't a good encouragement to complete my 30 minute run...
One thing I witnessed here in the States is that people are obsessed with diet. and I think when you mess up with your diet and you don't know what you are doing it does more harm then good. I have never had to diet before I moved to US. I am from the Mediterrenean cost. and we ate everything. I personally love butter, my olive oil, oven fresh bread, lamb etc. but when you think about all the protein, whole grains, fruits vegetables and fist we eat there it is a pretty healty diet. and we eat all the time. Lunch is never a sandwich...
I am not here to analyze the 2 cultures, but I think people hear so much about diet from reliable and unreliable sources, noone knows what to do. and people shut down their systems with eating 500 calories a day (with a huge coke on the side- supposedly fat free)
I think this type of programs have to be done by true experts, they don't know millions are watching it and it is affecting their lives...

Agree with you completely gokce! America is entire too obsessed with dieting. I think that is mainly because we constantly hear how overweight we are as a nation. And partly because our culture has these societal standards of what you "should" look like.

I agree Jennifer. I think it is very important the people are not overweight to the extent that it is unhealthy. but again not because how they look, but because it is unhealthy... also when you even gain 10 lbs people panic and cut everything. so your system shuts down. I think if people focus on exercise as much as on diet they will do much better... I think if you cut the junk and eat healthy, organic food, spend the time to cook yourself healthy meals and exercise eventually you will not have overweight problem.
