Help, I teach a toning and strength class and have several "baby boomers" who can't do anymore squats and lunges, what is the best alternative for them????

I am definitely a Baby Boomer and I do Squats and Lunges. I just started my training in March of this year. I started the squats using the Exercise Ball against the wall, then, after I got stronger, added weights. Lunges started out "not too deep" but now are much much lower. I am 55.

Use a rubber band and make them do exercises for the adductors and abductors.......
OR of course you can do half squat and half lunges......

I also do the "stabilizing" muscle exercise where you are on your elbows and toes. This has really helped a problem I had with my lower back and sciatica. I started out holding the position for about 10-15 seconds before resting, now I hold it for about 60 seconds. I am sure "younger" people can hold it longer but for my age I think that is great. I also do the smith machine at the gym for squats, and I have just started doing the squats with the bar across my shoulders, but still do not do those too often. I have found that us "Old Folks" can do a lot more than we think we can.
