I don't think you should add that much per week, I think you should add about 2 1/2 pounds per week. If you can't do the weight though, then don't even try it cuz you won't be going anywhere. Remember to keep a good form.

2 1/2 lbs is still alot if you're just beginning. How much do you max at right now, and how often do you lift? If you can max above 200 lbs, then I'd say adding 2 1/2 lbs every week is a pretty good goal... although I know that I HAVE NEVER been able to add even 2 1/2 lbs a week. Thats just me, though.

Always add enough to challenge the muscle. Never keep doing the same weight. The idea is to strive for heavier weights, thus more overload, and more growth induced.

Instead of adding more weight, do more reps, once you can do more reps than you care to do increase the weight and decrese the reps until you can increase the number of reps again. Keep this going until you plateau.

i'd imagine that increasing the weight would get you there faster, as your muscle is being challenged to a higher degree...
