As weather is starting to get yucky(Oregon rain yay!) I get to come home from work about an hour earlier than during warm weather days. I want to use this time to exersize. I'm going to get a Walking away the pounds dvd from my mom(gentle on the tummy/pelvic muscles), but also want to get 2 dumbells to work with on my arms. I haven't had access to any kinds of weights for almost a year, so I know I need to start low and work my way up.
So the question is....should I start out with 5lb-ers, or 10lb-ers?? I don't think I could do very many reps with the 10lbs to start out with, but I'm worried that if I get the 5lb-ers I'll grow out of them too quickly to make buying them worth it. Whaddya think?? |

My suggestion is that if you have no aversion to regular Dumbbells get a set of adjust able ones. They kind that range from just the handle (about 2lbs) to 20lbs per side. I think most sport stores sell something like that. I got a set from Bolinger for about 35 bucks.-------------- Less Talk, More Chalk! this is a link to Walmart to give you an idea what I am talking about. It has threads and a spin lock that I like makes for a much more solid dumbell. I use 2 sets of these at my home gym for one or more dumbells ranging in weights from 20-110lbs. -------------- Less Talk, More Chalk! I have absolutely no aversion to regular dumbells, I just was wanting them RIGHT NOW!!!! And cheap lol. Which means something I could pick up at Fred Meyers on the way home from work today. I'm pretty sure they only have the options of 5,10,15,20 pound bells in singles. :(

Do you have a walmart? that set I linked for you is 30$ probaly about close to what a set if fixed DB will cost.
And if you get reall strong and go past the 20LB mark you can buy more plates for them as well. -------------- Less Talk, More Chalk! The Men and Boys are Separated by one thing: The Squat Cage! 7707mutt@freetrainers.com |

The nearest Walmart is about 20 minutes away. The closest store with a sporting goods section is Freddy's. I can always look and see if they have something like that there as well. And if they don't(or it's too spendy) I could opt for a single dumbell until I can get to Walmart to check those out.

The answer is yes, they have a website...that shows you absolutely NOTHING of importance. It doesn't link to any items for sale unless it's electronics related, or specialty deli platters lol. I'll just have to stop by I think. :)

Cristal - this is another of those areas where resistance bands might be an option for you. In the weight you're looking at, they are cheap. I carry 3 different sizes with me when I travel (which is often)

I hadn't ever thought of resistance bands. I already got my little pink 5 pound bells, but thats a great idea for the future!

The bands I have work great for a hotel room workout as long as you make sure the strap that goes over the door is positioned correctly. Don't ask me how I know that. :)Other than that it's like having a full set of DB's for isolation work.
