Hi all,
I've read quite a lot recently about how squats are one of, if not the best overall mass builder..
While I can accept this is most likely very true, I was just interested to hear exactly why that is ?
I appreciate that squats work some of the biggest muscles in the body, but wondered if there was more to it than that - Does the sheer work involved actually trigger some sort of body-release for some growth hormone or something like that, or am I reading too much into it all ?
Just curious.. :)

Well when you do a squat the legs get most of the work. But since the weight is across your back you use most every other muscle to hold it up there(stablizer muscles). This is what bulids mass the fact that each muscle group gets some work at the same time.

Rob - mutt has it right but also a lot of the changes (both good and bad) are caused by the impact your workout has on the central nervous system. That's also one of the main reasons for making sure you have plenty of recovery time. Partially because of their size, the output generated by the legs when doing squats affects the whole body. People have been saying for years that if you want big biceps, do heavy squats.

Just to throw this in to. When you do squats, you are working a large and strong body part. Your body releases lots of testosterone and all that good stuff. So, naturally you will grow.
