I have a question....I've been working out for about 2 years.. I've been working at home...I've made good gains and loses....But I feel that the fact that I work out at home it is hard for me to get bigger because of the weight restriction because I have no help or no machine...Now I want to join a gym....Next to my house there is a Gym that is offering a 70 a month.... That is a lot....how can I tell if a gym is worth it or not...?....I don't like Bally Total fitness because...too many people...a 45 minute workout turns into a 90 minute workout....Can you guys help...should I do the 70 a month gym..is it worth it...It is a really nice place....Kind of Upscale....Thanks...and sorry for the long post...

Well a few things to look at. One is price do you feel it is worth 70 a month? Two, are you comfortable there? Can you work out there and feel good about going(not scared of the bigger guys etc). Three, are there other gyms in ther area that are not "upscale" that might be a better fit. I think that most of us here have done the Bally's thing. I work out of a gym that has no aerobics floor, or air conditioning. Also 2 of the guys that are there have qualified for the Mr. O this fall. It is a hardcore gym for the most part..for me that works. Just because they charge more does not make a gym better. So you need to look at it and make sure that you want to pay that much. I suggest to try out more than a few to see what fits you better.

Do you have a YMCA in your area? They are usually affordable, but of course all of them differ, so you might want to take a tour first to see what they have to offer, but then again you should do that for any gym you consider becoming a member of. The gym by your house would, at the least, be convenient; no long drive to get there.

John - I haven't seen a gym yet that didn't have a daily rate. Before you get stuck with a contract you don't want, go there a couple of times and see if it fits you.
