When you are trying to burn fat, should you be aiming to burn a certain amount of calories?

Yes...more than you consume!

does that go for the whole day or what??

Absolutely. If your daily diet plan has you eating 2,500 calories, then you will need to burn more than this daily in order for your body to burn its stored fat.

That seems really crazy high amount of cardio. My diet plan has me eating over 3000 calories.

Actually, not really. Your body burns calories even while you're resting. Your metabolism should increase when you consistently weight train. Supplement this with cardio (at least 3x per week) for 30-60 minutes and you'll be a fat-burning machine!

ACtually, I got one more to add. Now most of the CV equipment at my gym you can set for specific calories you would like to target. How accurate do you think they are and should I do it this way to target and make sure I burn off at least like for example 500 calories???

Not sure about their accuracy. Just make sure that you target around 80-85% of your max. heart rate for a sustained period. If you feel this may not be enough, you can use your search button for HIIT (high intensity interval training).
Good luck!

Also if you really want to tap into that fat to burn, do your cardio in the AM when you wake up. Do a search here at ft to read more about cardio training. Good Luck! Or if you choose do to cardio on days you lift perform it after your weight training sessions.

I also read that men get more of a fat burning benefit from cardio than women; totally unfair to me, but very cool for you.

No, it's not true lumina, but women just got more total fat than the men AND men have a natural higher metabolism.......
We can do something about that thou by putting on more lean muscle mass and boosting up our metabolism by HIIT and the diet. Luckily everything got a solution! (-;

But that was kind of my point, men can work at a lower intensity, w/o breaking out the big guns, and get the same results. Or am I missing the point?
