Compound moves are your basic strength/mass exercises like bench press, squats, dead lifts. Isolation is used mostly for your smaller muscles groups like biceps and triceps - ex: preacher curls and tricep kick backs.

Yes mike is right. When doing compound exercises more than one muscle group is working.
Isolation work is concentrated on one single muscle.

Compound movements help to build mass whereas your isolation movements are used to define and tone the muscle.
