...have barbells of different weights? The only barbells we have weigh 45 lbs. There is this tiny skinny looking one that maybe weighs 10 lbs., but the holes in the plates are much to big to put anything on it and the bar alone is usually too light. So I was just wondering is it better at different gyms or am I stuck with this?

The bar you are referring to is the Olympic bar (about 7ft long, 45lbs). There are shorter bars the weigh 35, and the EZ curl bar that weighs 25 (some can weigh less). Not all gyms will have all of these bars available. If the Olympic bar is all your gym has, then, sorry to say, you're stuck with it.

Curious - what excercises did you need a lighter bar for?

Well, I was trying to do military presses today. The little bar was much too light and I could only get out 7 reps with the Olympic one (and that was with some assistance).

Go ahead and do your presses with dumbells instead. Dumbells will increase your range of motion and you can be a bit more precise on the amount of weight you use. Give it some time and you'll be throwing the 45's on the bar and doing that for a warm up! ;)
