This is my first post here, although I have been lurking for a while. I'm 40 year old female and I've been working out off and on for the last 10 years. I've never really gotten the results I wanted, but I am now doing the Body for Life program and am very pleased so far with the results. My question is about cardio. THe BFL program stresses doing cardio first thing in the morning before you eat. My problem is that I just don't feel like I get as much out of it at that time. I don't have nearly as much energy, and sometimes I just don't feel ready to work out until I have had something to eat. How crucial is this? I have had different opinions from trainers on this topic and just don't know who to listen to anymore.
Any advice would be appreciated!

I am no expert by no means, but if I were you I would listen to your body. It is better to eat and workout with intensity then it is to just go through the motions. Hope this helps. sean......

not eating means your body will have to look for others sources for energy, and that will be your fat :) , you will feel not as energized because it takes longer to convert your fat into energy.

Welcome to ft! And thanks for filling out your profile.
Trainers usually advise cardio in the morning because your body will use fat stores for energy. If you eat first, then your body will use the nutrients from what you have eaten as energy instead of fat. If anything, make sure that you do cardio on an empty stomach (about 2 hours after your meal).
I hope this answers your question. If you have more, feel free to post. Good luck and keep us posted of your progress...

I have also followed the BFL program, and found the cardio first thing in the am is tough to start with, but you'll adapt. I dropped 40 pounds and am still going. Trust me, the am cardio will reap big benefits.

It's Sunday morning and I just finished doing 45 mins on the cross trainer. It's true that in the beginning I have to wake up and it's a little hard but then after a while you get use to it and when it's FINALLY finish you feel quite happy and proud of yourself. It's important to get something to eat straight afterwards thou (since your body might catabolize) I got two ways of doing my morning cardio. The first way was like this morning steady and slowly normally for 45-60 mins, the other times I do HIIT -High Intensity Interval Training where I'll only do 20-30 mins It's necessairy to change oterwise your body will get use to it and you'll stop getting gains.
My advice to you, astribling, is to try doing morning cardio for around one week and just see how your body reacts. Will you loose weight right ahead or is it just a torture every single morning you have to go throu? (o: Don't do it if it's something negative for you, then it's better to do it later (or you'll just stop completely doing it.....)
Good luck!

Thanks for all your advice! I will give the morning thing another try. As long as I know that there really is a good reason for doing it first thing, I"m sure I can make it through :)
Thanks! Alice
