Here is my problem.
I have been doing basketball since November. We go through 2 to 3 hour long college level practices. They are extremly hard and wear you out. The drills are hard but on top of that we run about 7-10 timed sprints at the end that are killers.
Needless to say lifting has taken a back seat because i am worn out and have no time. I usually only lift on Sunday. Am i loosing muscle because i can't lift or will the tough practices keep me at the same lifting level I stopped at???? any ideas to my problem?

IMHO, I think you will lose muscle. Not only due to lack of training, but due to the intense amount of cardio you are doing. Now, as to how you would prevent that from happening, I don't know. But, never fear, someone will be along shortly I'm sure to give advice on how to stop this from happening!

There are ways to prevent muscle loss. First make sure you eat throughout the day. Don' save up for the "big" meal after practice. If you can afford to take Mass Aminos and BCAA before and after practice. Sounds like you are doing explosive exercise so make sure you eat low glycemic complex carbs as well as protein. Keep the fat intake at the lower level as this is not the preferred energy source.
Might try this 20% fat 20% protein 60% carb. Take a multi. If you do it right you can maintain muscle and lean out too! Good luck.

With the tough pratices you might lose some muscle mass. But as far as your strength level the old saying if you don't use it you lose it. When I was in college a guy would come into the gym once a week and lift now he would only do one rep of his max weight for squats, bench and deadlift. One day I asked him why he does this and how long has he been doing it. He said he got to the level he wanted to lift he didn't need to go higher so he just comes in to lift the heavy weight the one time so he doesn't lose any strength. I have never tried this and am not sure if this guy was blowing smoke up my butt. In a way it does make sense to a degree. If you can only work out one day a week pick lifts that you dont want to lose strength in and focus on them. Good luck in Basketball and your training.

This guy you were talking about Sanddevil should be happy of not having any accidents with his heavy weights.
The prob with "Sunday work out people" is excactly what you say, they go into the gym, straight to the dbs (without warm up of course) and start directly to take extremely heavy and then....: accident happens (AND that's why peeps say that sport is dangerous...... It's not the "use to work out" peeps that get hurted, it's the "Sunday" ones....)

Anyway Lewdog, I'll say that once a week is better than nothing. Just be careful of warming up and using the right tecnic so you wont hurt yourself. Also to avoid catabolism (burning and loosing your muscles) when playing Basketball bring a protein shake with you (you can even drink one BEFORE and AFTER the match -just be sure that the one after contains some carbs as well)
Good luck to you!

It's hard balancing lifting and basketball. I used to play basketball in HS and it was tough...your workout brings back a lot of memories.

As far as the muscle loss, you may lose some if you don't feed your body with the right mixture of protein and carbs. You will also end up stretching your muscles a lot which will lengthen them and make them look a little leaner. This is natural; most basketball players are lean-looking. Of course, your leg muscles will develop pretty well because of the stress you put on them. They'll look pretty defined after a while.

Make sure you also drink plenty of water during and after your intense practices.

Good luck!
