My training partner has a little dilemma. He wants bigger calfs and has worked like a mad man. Every routine he has read in mags he has done. His calfs just won't grow. He even tried my routine but couldn't hack the weight or reps. I do heavy weight in the rep range of 30 to 50 ex: Donkey calfs 1x50 625lbs 1x30 same weight, sitting calfs 1x40 725lds, 1x50 650lbs, Standing calfs (due to a back injury) 3x50 400lbs. He wants calfs like mine but he is having a hard time understanding that genetics does play a role in your development. He has 14 1/2 inch arms and wants 18 inch calfs. Any recommendations on reps, variations on training, other lifts than the three I mentioned. He weights 178 pounds and is able to do half my weight for reps on first sets then he goes down hill from there.

The only thing I can say is that it might helps if he slows down....... For ex try doing standing calf -all the way up and all the way down, but controlling the movement so it turns very very slow. This way more muscle fibres get to work and maybe in his case it'll help.

Well, some people just don't have the genetics to build big calfs. i have the same problem with my calfs. I could do a million different types of workouts for my calfs and they wouldnt even grow that much. All he can do is just keep working and maybe his calfs will start growing.

And why not do your calfs exercises on the leg press machine? If you cannot feel this one burning and you wont see any results, I agree then that maybe you don't have the genetics to build big calfs..... (o:
Musclerage, you'll need to grow your calfs for competition.

Where I live the closest gym is a real dump. We turned my friends garage into a gym. we use barbels, dumbells, squat rack, incline bench, flat bench, lat pull down machine, sitting calf machine and we made a cable cross-over machine. The sad thing is our "gym" is better equiped for our needs than the local gym. I have tried calf training on a hip sled machine it only went up to 400 lbs and it took alot of reps to get a burn on it I tried one leg calf raises on it it worked fine for that but the way the sled is set up my foot kept sliding and I didn't want to get hurt. Don't get me wrong machines are good for safety but I prefer free weights Dave
