Terrence, if you're on the mass program, start with lighter weights working your way up to heavy weights. The lighter weights should help you "warm up" and get your muscles ready for the heavier weights. The last set should be the heaviest you can lift with the recommended rep. If you feel you can do a little more, then do a superset...this always give me that added "burn" at the end of the 4th set.

Good advice from our friend rpacheco. Tdiddy, the first sets of many reps are in fact to make sure of warming up the muscles (to avoid hurting yourself when taking more heavy).

Choose a weight where it's difficult to do more than 2-3 reps MORE than the written rep number.... It has to be a little hard to do, but since you're beginner be careful of not taking TOO heavy....

Start light then go up. Starting heavier would just stunt you from finishing future sets and reps during your workout.
