Well folks, the season is upon us once again where it is too cold to train out of doors(unless of course you are one of those ice swimmer folks!). So now, it is time for the indoor triathlon! This is the test of champions! Couch potatoes of the world, unite! Step one, is a run on the treadmill; step two, the stationary bike; and step three, laps in the pool(and I hope everyone has access to an indoor pool at their gym!). Now, seeing as how the last annual one around my area was, well, last year, I don't remember how far you were supposed to go in each event, but I'm going to start training anyway! I think it was something like 5k run, 10k bike and 200m swim, but it may not have been that much. If anyone knows for sure, let me know! I'll post here how my training goes. I'm going for 1 mile run, 1 mile bike and 1/2 lap swim to start :). |

Okay, well, last week was a bust, possibly because my son was in the hospital for a while, then out of school the rest of the week. Or I could have just been using that as an excuse :). Anywho, I started this week and...I did .6 miles on the treadmill, 1 mile on the bike and 1 1/2 laps in the pool Not bad for day one I thought. The only problem is that I think the pool has too much chlorine! So, since I can't find any info on how far I'm supposed to go, I'll just set my goals here. Eventually, I want to work up to : 5 miles walk/run 10 miles bike and 8 laps pool To get to that goal, I'll try to increase my walk/bike time by 1/2 mile every week, and increase laps by 1/2 lap every week. So, in 9 weeks I'll reach my walk/run goal and then I'll start working on decreasing my time to goal. In 13 weeks I'll reach my lap goal, and I'll start working on timed laps. And finally, in 18 weeks, I'll reach my bike goal. That puts us at the end of March, so then I'll have to start working on my tan so when swimsuit season starts, I'll look cool in a bikini with my bad triathloning self! Ha! Wish me luck! And if you want to join in, just post your weekly training results here! |

Huh, hmmm got a question here.... I'm in the metric system....I know the miles though but how far is a lap?!!!!! Pool lap? never heard about it, sorry.Geez, I wish I had a pool in my gym.... By the way, Triathlon is good, but it's still a good idea to do some general weight training next to it. I don't know if you do that (you prob do). Just twice a week would do it. Talking about being cold... It's freeeezing in France now!!! |

Philia2,Greetings. Hope all is well in France. A pool, can vary in size from small back yard ones to olympic size. Normally, you'll be looking at 15 to 30 meters in lenght and around 12 to 20 in width. A lap in the pool consists of swimming the lenght from one end to the other and back. That is one lap. Regards, Guitarlove. |

It all depends on the pool size :). The big pools at the gym are probably 25 meters, so 8 laps is 200 meters. 20 laps would be 500 meters, or 1/2 kilometer. You should be almost ready to swim the English Channel by now! :) |

Nah not the English Channel! It's brrrrr freeeeeezing now!!!! But later why not? I actually live next to the sea so maybe instead of going to the swimming pool (lots of old French ladies taaaalking instead of swimming) I should put a wet suit on and jump in the waves. Just for your information, all public swimming pools in Europe are normally 25 m long. We do have some few Olympic Pools and they are 50 m (which is a lot nicer too!!) |

Just wondering.Today's results: walk 1 mile bike 1 mile swim 1 1/2 lap Tomorrow's goals walk 1 mile bike 1 mile swim 2 laps The pool was _so_ cold today, and it's even supposed to be heated! I hope it's better tomorrow! |

Okay, yesterdays results:1 mile walk 1 mile bike 2 laps swim I noticed that my speed has increased in both the walk and the bike. Monday it was a 20 minute walk for 1.1 miles and a 15 minute bike for 1 mile. I don't yet time laps. Tuesday I got 16.5 minute walk for 1 mile and 12 minute bike for one mile. Today's goals: 1 mile walk 1 mile bike 2 laps It's the same as yesterday, but I really had trouble finishing the laps, so I thought it couldn't hurt to build speed and whatever on hump day. Thursday's goals will be : 1 mile walk 1.5 mile bike 2 laps swim Philia, the reason I asked your nationality is because your english is so good. It's one of my pet peeves that in European countries, english is taught as a subject beginning in elementary school, along with the natural language, while here in America, foreign language study doesn't begin until high school, and even then it is an optional course. I'm trying to get foreign languages started sooner, because they are so helpful for a child's future, but there is really no funding or time to fit extra schooling into the school day schedule. Oh well! Maybe one day American's will make education their top priority. |

Well, I didn't get it today. I got 1 mile walk 1 mile bike 1 1/2 laps swim However my times in the walk and bike improved, so it's not so bad. I think I just overworked before I got in the pool, so I couldn't finish. Maybe tomorrow will be better, right? |

Same question here, you take a day off? You know sometimes the same exercise feels ten times more hard to do than the other day (especially when you are ill, or if you haven't slept or eated well...) Don't take that as a bad thing but instead look for monthly results. As Guitar said, we're with you so keep going on. Thank you so much for your nice words about my English.... Actually I speak 4 languages lol I love it and the very best thing is that the more languages you know the easier it is to learn others.... It's true that it'll never be the same thing as your mother language (and you'll always make mistakes and have an accent) but it's still too funny to be able to order a beer on severel different kind of languages!! I rest on the weekends! I think my big problem right now is that I have been a couch potato for so long, then trying to jump into something so intense is overwhelming. Today's exercise was poor as well. I'm hoping that I'll come back Monday and be improved. I think the best thing about it so far is the stress reduction. I just feel so much better after I'm done, whether I reach my goal or not. I did make the mistake of getting on the scale today, when I shouldn't have until Monday. I had gained 2 pounds! It was frustrating, but I figure it is because I have been using my legs so much on the bike, that my muscles have grown, right? :)Oh well, try again tomorrow. Consistency is the key to being successful. 4 languages is pretty cool. I used to speak Spanish in high school, I took 5 years, but now, I can hardly even understand it. The sad part is that we live in an area with a large hispanic population, so speaking Spanish has almost become a job requirement. I guess I could learn it again if I had to, but not right now. |

Alorle, you know when first starting to exercise it's normal that your body gain weight. You have started to use your muscles, and muscles need water and other things, BUT don't worry, it's a veeeery good thing to have muscles instead of fat. First of all muscles take up 22% less space than fat and secondly lean muscle mass will make you burn a lot more calories than usual (even when you are resting, and this will help you to stay slim as well!!)The weight loss will come right after (and the most important thing is not what the scale says but the mirror!!!). By the way, you are no longer a couch potato (like so many else!) be proud of that, and keep going on! |

Well, I went AWOL for the past 2 weeks! First it was Thanksgiving week, and the kids were both home, and the husband was off of work as well. I thought I was going to go crazy! Then the next week, we had a big ice storm going on all week, it was all yucky outside, and the heater on my car broke, so there was no way I was driving to the gym in below freezing weather! So now I'm back. I just did treadmill today. I did 30 minutes and around 1.75 miles. I didn't go as fast as I usually do, but I had 2 weeks off, and I walked a lot longer, so it was okay. My big accomplishment though, is that I have been Coke free for 4 days. I think the Coca-Cola stock prices have crashed due to my lack of patronage :). I also haven't had any junk food either. I just decided that the cokes and the junk food were an addiction just as bad as smoking or drinking, and that I needed to be the master of my own body, not them. Of course, I am not very strong willed, so the battle may soon be lost, but for now, I am doing well! I hope to stay coke and candy free until Xmas, then I can eat a whole Chocolate pie! :) |

It's not bad when you just taste a little bit.... Maybe it's better to do that instead of saying to yourself that you cannot eat anything of your sweets at all... Then if you brake and eat a little candy or drink a little bit of coke, then everything is not lost. You understand what I mean? Anyway, for me it's easier when I never make any food "illegal".... Keep going on with the good work of yours! |

Yeah, I understand, but it's not really denying myself anything. It's more of, well, if I'm thirsty, I don't _have_ to have a Coke, I can drink water. And am I hungry? Or am I just bored? Is that why I need those oreos, because I don't have anything better to do? And, if I am hungry, isn't there anything better for me that I can eat? Where I am trying to get is from the point where I _need_ to drink a Coke (addiction), to where I _want_ to have a Coke (choice). |
