Okay, I know this topic comes up alot so I apologize. I searched around a little yesterday and a site (healthstatus.com)said that during cardio my thr should be about 130-140. Is this accurate?? Everything else I've seen says like 160. And what do you all think of heart monitors?

It all depends on your age. I am 24 and for a cardio workout I should be at 160-170 for target of 85-90%. If I want the fat burning target I should be between 120-130. It all depends on what you want to target. I used to do cardio 6x per week, but my personal trainer said that was too much for me and put on on 3x cardio and 3x fat burning. Hope this helps.

Here's a simple formula.. also for the community:

First calculate your resting heart rate by placing the index and middle finger of one hand on the opposite wrist just below the base of the thumb and count the number of beats for 10 seconds. Multiply that number by 6 and you have your heart rate in beats per minute.

..Next use this method (Karvonen Method):

220 - Age - Resting Heart Rate = (A)
(A) x .65 + Resting Heart Rate = the low end of target heart rate zone
(A) x .85 + Resting Heart Rate = the high end of target heart rate zone

The target is 20 minutes 4 x a week

Good Luck

As for the heart monitors, I think they are a great idea! I am looking for one, to use especially when I do Spinning. (I have recently become a Spinning ADDICT! My gym doesn't do it enough though, only twice a week that I can get to
:( )

Okay--when doing my "cardio" should I be striving for the fat burning zone or cardio zone. I am on the weight loss/tone program. Last night I did 40 minutes in the fat burning zone. Am I doing it wrong? Thanks--

Missa, if you have adopted the combination of weight training and good diet, either zone will help you lose weight. If you do not weight train, then the fat burning zone is what you should strive for.
