How long should I relax my muscles between sets to maximize the effectiveness of the exercise I'm doing?

Hey.. good question.

It all depends on whether you are training heavy.. or light.. whether you are training for size or endurance.

Please be more specific.

I do low weights, high reps. I wait about 60 seconds between each set.

Yes when working with light weights the rest should be 30-90 secs. When taking heavy the rest can be up to 2-3 min (or more). It all depends on what you are looking for.

I'm doing high weight, low reps, training for maximum muscle and strength growth. So how long between sets?

That's going to vary with your recovery time - As a rule, I use between 2 and 3 minutes when training heavy.
