i recently started working out again after a year. ive done absolutely no type of exercise in that year. i started working out two weeks ago starting at 224.4 lbs. the first week i jogged twice a day on a treadmill each time until the machine read 500 calories. during the morning i did my workouts. arms and chest one day shoulders another....you get it. i been eating around 1200 calories a day. first week i lost 4 lbs even. then i did the same last week but raised my cardio to 600 calorie each time. however i lost 1.5 lbs, whats wrong? people say im looking thinner but the scale doesn't. anyone know why?

I wish I could help you. But I'm on my second week of working out after being fairly sedentary and after one week of working out five days a week with some weights and 30-40 min of cardio (so like an hour or more of working out) I actually gained weight by the end of the week. Needless to say, me and the scale are no longer on speaking terms!

Scales are useless with weight training.
It's about burning fat and with lifting weight you add muscle which is heavier then fat meaning it takes more fat to equal the same amount of weight of muscle because muscle is more dense.
So just because you have less fat on your body doesn't mean you won't gain weight because if you lift you'll lose fat and gain muscle making you leaner in fat but you may indeed end up weighing more.
Now all of this is for a beginners faze of about 4 months then you have to earn the muscle growth by eating more or you will not grow anymore.
Ness I hope your a women because 1200 calories is even to low for a women IMO.

Now that I think about it. You may be shocking your system with workouts like this and so little caloric intake. Your body may be going into starvation mode and conserving fat. Which is why the weight loss is slowed. For me the other day I noticed I began to lose weight again, and my guess might be that now that I'm at the end of my second week my body has now adjusted to the routine and can now burn fat as it is no longer in shock from going from a sedentary life style to five days a week of working out. Maybe someone with more experience could shed light on the situation.

Too much too soon and at too much of a calorie deficit.
1-2 pounds a week weight loss is excellent, anything more is probably fluid and possibly muscle.
Create a slight calorie deficit through diet and a little bigger through exercise. You need to look up the calorie calculator - I know I posted a FAQ about it - check the FAQs forum. Figure out your daily caloric needs and create about a 200-300 cal deficit , then exercise for another 300-500 and your weight loss should be steady.
Also, take measurements - it is much more motivating to see the inches come off and will change more often than the scale as your body changes shape.

Huh???? In terms of weight a pound is a pound. So muscle is not heavier than fat. In terms of volume, a pound of fat takes up more space than a pound of fat, but one is not heavier than the other. Don't confuse weight with volume.
