Hey Everyone,

So I'm a 24 y/o female, 5'5" 120lb ave, fluctuating about 5 lb's or so...

Here's my issue...I run about 30 miles a week, and eat extrenely healthy about 90% of the time and yet my body stays UNCHANGED...obvious not only to me but to family members and friends. I'm not over-weight but I have extra fat that I JUST CAN'T LOSE and I WANT TO. I feel like my body goes against science...what is going on? Any thoughts?

How much of the "healthy foods" are you eating? Too much or too little can put you in the spot your in right now. The fluctuating weight is normal, every evening I always weigh 3-5 lbs more than in the morning. I'd guess you could probably benefit from a 1400-1500 calorie a day diet. Also, it would seem that you are neglecting one of the most beneficial components to weight loss,...a strength training routine. Try cutting back on the cardio a little, and find a couple days a week to do some strength training. You wont get "big like a guy" I promise. Muscle tissue is a big time calorie consumer, so if you add a little lean mass, it'll go a long way.

Well, unfortunately my gut doesn't seem to like a real high protien diet...I think it was taking a toll on my galbladder... So, I lean more toward an almost veggitarian diet... ALOT of fruits and vegetables. I've sometimes wondered if I'm maybe not eating enough cause I'm always hungry...but then if I eat more I end up gaining weight. I would guess I'm having somewhere around 1000-1200 cals a day.

I know you're right, I need to get back into weights...I had a good routine for a few years but then I got super busy w/ only time for one or the other... so since it is so hard for me to lose my extra fat I feel like my priority should be cardio. I know that when I do ONLY weights I just gain muscle w/o losing the fat so then it pushes the fat out. I think I'm afraid if I switch my cardio off and on w/ weights I'll have no chance to lose my extra fat..... Do you thnk 2 days of weights is too little?

Definately not eating enough at 1000-120 calories per day

Just my thoughts: If you're eating between 1000-1200 calories a day then your body might be in starvation mode.
Maybe you should try eating between 1400-1600 calories a day and see what happens. . .?

I agree with Scarlet, people who are on low cal diets who add calories often start to lose weight. Know that our bodies are constantly trying to conserve energy and w/a low cal diet it will conserve fat while relying more on carbs and protein ie: MUSCLE. If you lose you lose metabolism.

Instead of running 30 miles a week, which doesn't seem to be helping, not to mention long dist. running burns up muscle tissue, cut that number in half and start sprinting.

Two days a week is fine, as long as you hit each muscle group at least once a week. Be sure to make the strength training challenging though. Oh, and as far as protein goes, Boca makes some really good veggie burgers(tomato, basil is my favorite) that have like 70 calories and 10 grams of protein per serving. The thing with protein is that if you don't get enough, it's really tough for your muscle to repair themselves, and you may actually be losing muscle mass. Especially with long bouts of cardio, which could be actually cannibalizing your muscle tissue for fuel. Don't go wild with the protein, but don't discount it either. For now try to shoot for around 40 grams per day(I believe 60 is whats recommended for the "average person" at a 2000 calorie per day diet ).

Meant to say, "If you lose muscle you'll slow down your metabolic rate"

Thanks for all the good advice you guys. I needed those reminders...

It'll be hard for me to run less b/c it's so darn addicting. Buuut, someone made a good point when they said that the running isn't working...ha...I'm afraid of doing less b/c I want to lose those extra chubbies and yet...well, it hasn't happened yet. So, I'll try it... more protein, less running and more weights. I'll prolly do something like half an hour of sprinting and then some weights to follow...er...I'll figure it out. I only really have at most 60 minutes a day and that's only b/c I get up crazy early to do it....

30 miles is good but there are other running workouts that help than just running long distance. Have you tried HIIT or runners call Fartlek running? It will halp with weight loss and will help you with your kick at the end of a race.
