Looking at your Profile you are a little overweight, I'd suggest getting into some sort of Cardio program. Walking, biking, eliptical, try to keep it low impact, for your knee's sake.
After you can do 20-30 minutes of any, or all of these, you can likely start doing pushups, and situps.
Do you have any workout equipment or a gym Membership? I'd also suggest getting into a weight routine, keep it light enough at first, and keep increasing your weights.
Pushups and situps are really a gauge to your overall fitness, I can't really say any one exercise will make you better at them, but better overall Fitness will help you become better at these exercises.

Start with push-ups standing - put your hands on the wall, walk your feet out a little behind you and plank from your toes, then lower yourself towards the wall by bending your arms.
Just start with basic crunches - you don't need to get a lot of motion to feel your abdominals working. Lie on your back and place your feet on the floor, knees bent. place your hands behind your head (no pulling) and crunch up a little with the goal being to get your shoulderblades off the mat. Don't forget to breath.
-------------- Argue for your limitations, and sure enough, they\'re yours.
