On my intensity days I usually do some HIIT. I get caught up in past failures and tell myself that if my body is physically able to keep going then im not going to stop. Lately I've been thinking that I'm TOO motivated. Because I've been getting closer to 100% effort than ever before. I can usually barely walk out of the gym, my lungs feel like I just smoked half a pack of ciggerettes and then I go home and sleep, at 3 pm. Ive reached levels that are more intense than most races I've run. So my question is....how intense should an intense run be?

I'm not sure how I ever trained without a heart rate monitor.

Heart rate monitors really don't come into play during HIIT. On your up intervals you should be working at your maximal exertion, on your down intervals you should recover to a moderate heart rate or so you can breath again before you go back up. Your heart rate will skyrocket in those up intervals.
-------------- Argue your limitations and they are yours.

Well the thing is, im a distance runner, so my routine is quite different than most peoples i think. I sprint a half mile and then rest for 1 minute. and then do that five more times, and it kills me. I've always said its more of a brain workout than anything else because i have to make myself keep going.
