I am new to working out with a well divised plan. My question is about the amount of weight to use with each set of repitions. My goal is to lose weight and tone (add some muscle too. I am wondering if I should increase, decrease, or keep same weight with each set. So if I should do 4 sets 20,12,10,8 how should the amount of weight used be handled?
Thanks

Increase the weight per set, the last couple of reps should be a struggle while maintaining proper form.

Most common is what is called the "Pyramid" Method. This means that you add weight to each set. Lets take Bench press as an example: 4 sets first number is the weight, then reps: 95x20 105x12 115x10 120x8.
You CAN start out heavier for the first set then lower the weight....that is called a descending set. I would not suggest that to a beginner. I have used the "keep the weight the same" time to time but I do not like it for a beginner or for any length of time.

start out using 20-15-12-10.. keep the same amount of weight. the next week use the pyrmaid method only for benching. for everything else use 20-15-12-10, or 4 sets of 15. wen your feeling stronger add about 2.5- 5 pounds of weight to each side. I guarantee results for that.
