How can I get better and doing more reps of push ups?

I am deployed to the desert right now with the military, and dont have access to a gym. Are there any at home things I can do to increase my push ups?

I heard of one routine,

"do 200 push ups as quick as you can, break when needed, then continue until you do them.

Then the next day, do 200 push ups throughout the day, sets of 10 , 20, 50, however long it takes you to complete 200.

Alternate these for 14 days, then take a week off"

I could really use some feedback into this routine, and is it even worth trying, or maybe some new ideas, please help.

What is your reasoning for pushup endurance?

Regardless, I'd think that your routine would help you increase the number you could do though. I'd do 2 days, take a day off, 2 days, take a day off, etc.

Incorporate changing the angle of your body. For example, put your feet up on something. or put something under your hands.

Can you get a hold of a big elastic band. I imagine the minis from elitefts.com would do. Wrap the band around your upper back and hold down the ends with you hands.

I have heard of your push up routine. I believe Stew Smith, a well known fitness guy and ex-navy seal uses that one. He says to do that routine for 10 days, rest for 3 days and on the 14th day, you should have improved significantly. I tried his pull up routine and it worked good.

One thing I have always read is that to be good at push ups, you have to DO push ups. My LT. does 300 every night and is up to doing the first set in 100 reps and then additional sets until he reaches 300. He does this 5 times a week. Just some food for thought...good luck.
