You do not have to have anything. However, the carbs will help the protein do its thing. Carbs are protein sparing as it is, and taking in carbs will allow them to be utilized for their needs, and the protein has more of a chance to be utilized for what you dream of, muscle building. Now, is this necessary, well, depends on who you talk to. However, most of this was started by the supplement companies. There still is no studies that prove anything other than uptake/supercompensation so to speak. But does this translate to more muscle? This takes a long term study, and to date none can confirm this. I can tell you by personal experience, I have been doing this since the late 90's, and can not verify it has done anything to accelerate muscle growth. For years, bodybuilders did not do this, they worked out, went home and ate and gained. You decide.

good point... those precise details are always something to argue about... i started lifting hard 3 to 4 years ago... i did thorough research on the subject of nutrition, weight lifting, and everything related to it, pretty much... i tried just about all that was suggested... lifting in different styles and eating in different styles... the pwo shake was also consumed in many different fashions... and now, all i can say is that, though i don't have a 300 year bodybuilding experience like bb1fit, i did gain consistently every time i ate enough calories and a reasonable % of protein... the details have not made a whole world of difference... taking creatine, glutamine, precisely calculated pwo's, etc.., always help, i guess, but going without those things didn't stop me (or hasn't yet) from gaining strength and size...
