So I am still new to this whole "exercise" thing, lol, and was just confused by a couple different articles that I have read. First off, I heard about this type of training called HIIT, High Intensity Interval Training, which I was told is VERY beneficial to kick starting weight loss and fat burning. Basically jogging for one minute, then going into an almost dead spring for another minute while going back to jogging for the next minute, and continuing this process for 10 - 15 minutes. Then another article I was reading about raising one's metabolism said that to do this and be able to burn fat, one should exercise continuously for 30-60 minutes.
A couple questions are raised from this. 1st - Has anyone heard about this HIIT training I was talking about? 2nd - Coming from professionals or people who have lost a lot of weight, which do you think is better? I really am at a loss. I did the HIIT and it was kind of fun, but I also like running distance for fun as well. 3rd - I assume that raising my metabolism will benefit my fat loss, is this true? If so, any comments on ways to do that?
So, any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Chad

MIx it up and do both - do HIIT a few times a week and do longer, endurnace style cardio a couple other days. Variety is a good way to keep your body from adjusting and lowering the calorie burn.
There have been a lot of discussions about HIIT - look it up in fitbuddy - the search engine at the bottom of the screen.
Personally I like HIIT for a few reasons - it takes less time (20-30 minutes total) , it burns hella calories (which is why people say it burns more fat), and it flies by because you are watching the time and just trying to make it through the next high interval :)
That said, I also enjoy longer, endurance cardio because I can kind of kick back and relax...and play Halo while I ride my bike:)
Anyhow - a lot of cardio discussions have been had here, also....
Anytime you move more than you have moved previously, you are burning more calories and raising your metabolism - the most important thing is that you do SOME kind of cardio (along with weight training, of course).

Everything you are assuming is true. I have been doing HIIT for about a year now and have drastically improved my running and cardio endurance. It has also done wonders for losing the fat around my stomach as well as all over of course.
I do HIIT and 5 mile distance running to mix it up so trust asimmer's advice. But definately do HIIT runs. There are different ways of doing it. Doing it by time, distance or both. Mix it up though to get the best results. Good luck.
