I have lost about 32 lbs in the last 17 weeks. I started with the Body for Life program and have kept a lot of the same ideas after the 12 weeks were up. Part of that program is to work out (cardio and weights) on an empty stomach. I am getting closer to my goal and am more interested in keeping muscle than just losing fat. I still probably have about 20-25 lbs to lose before I am at my goal. My question is should I continue working out on an empty stomach or not? If not what kind of low calorie pre-workout and post-workout "meal" should I have? Do I need more than just a protein shake? My goal is still to lose weight so I am on a restricted diet and whatever I have would count torward my goal of around 1900 calories a day. Also if someone would outline do's and don'ts for keeping lean body mass when trying to lose weight that would be greatly appreciated. I have learned a lot on this forum and I am sure that you guys will say not to workout on an empty stomach, just not sure what is best to have. I dont have a lot of time between getting out of bed and going to the gym so anything heavy is out of the question. Thanks in advance for your help.

"I dont have a lot of time between getting out of bed and going to the gym so anything heavy is out of the question."
That is to bad, because lifting heavy during weightloss will help you retain muscles. You need to give them a reason to stick around during weightloss. Doing high rep low weight stuff is not going to do that.
I would eat before lifting, especially if you are doing it in the morning and you haven?t ate anything for > 8 hours. Have some eggs, oatmeal, fruit. I think that that a protein shake will do the trick too.

no, sorry, you misunderstood. I go to the gym right after getting up so eating anything heavy before lifting is out of the question. I dont have 30-45 minutes to let my food digest before working out. I lift heavy every time I work out. I use a weight that I can do no more than 8-12 reps before failure.

Ahhh...good man. Again, a protein shake won't hurt. I might some carbs(like and apple or some other fruit) for energy.

This is where I recommend an MRP. Normally I am not fond of them, but when you are pressed for time, this is the ticket. Liquid, nutritional and fast digesting.

o.k. so some research revealed the answer to my question. Meal Replacement Powder. What would be a good brand or type to buy. Also, would adding a fat free yogurt to my protein shake serve the same purpouse, i.e. providing some carbs?
