Squat is a full body movement. It really helps to develop your "core" (abs and lowerback) as well as your legs. While your legs are doing most of the dynamic work, your abs and lower back are used to stabilize your upperbody. I think that most people forget this or never learn it, but when doing the squat concentrate on taking a big breath into your belly and pushing out on your abs really hard. Make yourself look pregnant or like you have a beer belly. Basically, by doing this you take advantage your body?s natural belt. Also make sure that your chest is up and out. People that don?t do this correctly tend to fall forward and good morning the weight up.

Also, your body likes to be in balance, as does everything else. There is a theory that your body will only let you get so out of proportion. Thus, if your legs are lagging, your upper body will stop growing to keep it in check.

In addition - large movements like the squat and deadlift stimulate more growth hormones - so that in turn translates to more muscle all over.
big_j_scf - if that was true about your body liking to be in balance you wouldn't see so many guys with big upper bodies and chicken legs, which I see a lot of - many guys train only the 'ego' muscles like the chest and biceps, leaving their legs scrawny and neglected.
