I have been on a month layoff from working out and a few months from getting a steady schedule for workouts and made a New Years resolution to get back into the workouts full fledged (Nutrition, Weightlifting, Cardio) I am a Nutritional Sciences major at Penn State so I'm starting to learn the goods and bads so to speak about the nutrition. I have been lifting for a good 6 years now so I have been able to see what works and what doesn't as far as lifting.

My question is about the cardio aspect. I have the universities swimming pool available to me everyday for about 4 hours so I am able to do my weightlifting workout for the particular day and then I go to the pool and swim laps. I have heard so much that swimming is a good cardio workout as well as workout many many of the muscles in your body and aids in giving you the cut that you are looking for. I am very amateur at the whole swimming laps workout. Any suggestive workout regimens for the swimming? Is it a good alternative to running for cardio or just an add-on? Your help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Swimming is indeed a great cardio exercise.

However, if adding muscle is of greatest importance to you, this may well interfere. Think about it, most all swimmers you see are very very lean with little muscle. What does this tell you?

Lots of calorie burn. Probably not conducive to muscle building.
