As a practicing muslim, I am celebrating the Muslim month of Ramadhan by fasting for the whole month. Fasting on this month would mean that it is not permissible to eat or drink anything beween sunrise and sunset. Although I am fasting, I still would like to continue weight training.

When would be the best time for me to do this? Should I go to the gym an hour or so before sunset and end the gym session by breaking my fast soon after? Or should break my fast with a small meal then head to the gym?..

Thanks guys..

Is it possible for you to wait until sunset then have a small meal then the gym...then a healthy meal???Either way I think you may need to take it easy in the gym until you are done fasting...but wait and see what someone more knowledgeable answers...this is an interesting topic...good luck!!

I thought I remembered reading a good post a couple of years ago but it took a couple of minutes to find it. Here it is:

http://freetrainers.com/FT/jsp/Message.jsp?f_ix=0&t_ix=5678
i would get a good fix of slow burn carbs in. oats, muesli or any cereal and grain products. supplement that with a healthy protein shake or an egg sandwich in wholemeal to your taste of course and you haven't had a peice of fruit yet, so have a peice! so that's your morning before sunrise. okay so lunchtime you'll probably start getting to be hungry, but you will be loaded with good food from the morning. and you only have to wait till it's dark.
once it's dark you can be more planned and eat something 2 hourly to make up the deficit and to show the body it doesn't need to switch to starvation mode- keep it simple and small grazing on a good mix of carb/protein/fats... drink water much more than you normally would too. get in a good sixteen glasses a day if you can!

correct me if i'm wrong, ramadan is not about starvation, it's about you and control of yourself. yes it does remind you of people less fortunate and of the suffering of others etc... and this can be a very reflective time for you as a muslim(hey i don't know much but i'm just trying to sell my perspective without insulting someone who has a different religion to me as i do agree whole heartedly with the practise of ramadan and the basics i understand about it)but it's only daylight that gives you a don't eat- so ensure you get the most excellent control outside of those hours. i would also say don't exercise on an empty stomach unless you want to lose muscle/weight.

remember you may have sick days when you cannot follow this regime to the letter during rammadam(it is allowed to miss one but add one isn't it?)- i don't know how this works but if you get too weak whilst training and really can't keep it up properly- can you class this pressure as sick for a day, then for your own retribution add a day on to your rammadam period each time you may need to? (it's a naughty suggestion you may be able to agree with)- but i do mean when you seriously are feeling depleted and a good lunchtime would put you back on track.

i do wish you all the best with this. i have a friend who failed miserably last year due to some terrible stomach ulcers and digestive problems and i know he never reedeemed himself- so today he was talking about how he has to do it for himself this year as he feels ashamed. i didn't get it as i said to him as at work we are christians and it's only us christians who know he cheated at work and he was vwery sick on many days- he says ''thats not the point.'' so medals all round just for trying- i couldn't do it!

wow thanks for the quick feedback and for being such good sports :D .. and thanks for the pre-sunrise meal idea. I will try that out tomorrow.

I'm not too sure if getting tired as a result of the gym would count as being 'sick' and I would not want to risk having to break my fast before sunset.

I guess I'll try out that meal plan that you mentioned and see how it can help me at the gym before breaking my fast.
