I've always worked out my upper body because I've heard that most of the leg exercises (squats, calf raises, leg press, etc.) can really screw up your ankles and knees. Am I just being paranoid or is there some truth in this?

No it's all bs. Squats and other closed chain exercises are all safe and the preferred way to train. Squats, lunges, deadlifts, step ups, ...etc...if you're not doing these exercises then quite honestly you're wasting your time in the gym. Also although leg press is a big exercise it's a poormans version of squats and deadlifts....you can pile on the weight but it transfers over poorly to real life and not as effecient at working legs. If you're worried about knees then avoid the leg extensions(usually in form of a machine)...

I have never heard that they would screw up your ankles and knees. I agree with menace. You should definitely work all muscle groups.

ok...lets test your arguement....ahhmm
largest muscles in your body are located where? ( lower)
So doing 15 setas of curls....on biceps is better for you....(them being very small) as opposed to the largest in your body?

I noticed when I do lunges, I fall over my feet not because of the weight because Im a bit clumsy on my feet. So I decided to do the machines and man, my butt, thies, hamstrings and all the muscles there hurt like crap! Since Im female and really dont care about bulking only toning, should I keep doing machines or do free weights?

keep to free weights. the best thing about lunges is they are single leg movements so they help to develop one leg at a time with training stabilizers. in other words, the more you do them, the less clumsy you will be.

One of the folks on here recently introduced me to split squats. I use the single leg version. With some added dumbbells, they work really good for me. :)
