I have a difficult time understanding the weight lifting/cardio “mix”, i.e. when to do what when. I have looked through different posts here and elsewhere and it may be a personal thing, but is there any REAL science to back up the different timing of each? Below I list 3 scenarios and I have read where people say it is optimal to perform this way and others that way. I am just plain confused as to the timing of which and if either scenario would lead to overtraining.
My desired workout: 4 day split (each bodypart once week); 3 session’s cardio (20-mins)
My desired priority: maintain muscle; keep body fat in check and heart healthy
Scenario #1
Monday – Lift
Tuesday – Cardio
Wednesday – Lift
Thursday – Cardio
Friday – Lift
Saturday – Lift; cardio right after
Sunday - OFF
Scenario #2
Monday – Lift; cardio right after
Tuesday – Lift; cardio right after
Wednesday – OFF
Thursday – Lift; cardio right after
Friday – Lift (quad, calve day), no cardio
Saturday – OFF
Sunday – OFF
Scenario #3
Monday – Lift AM – Cardio PM
Tuesday – Lift AM – Cardio PM
Wednesday – OFF
Thursday – Lift AM – Cardio PM
Friday – Lift (quad, calve day), no cardio
Saturday – OFF
Sunday – OFF
** (AM = 7:00 – PM = 5:00)
my understanding (if Ron responds go with what he says since he is the expert) is you don't want to do Cardio right after because while lifting you break your muscle downs & then your body will use what is in its system to burn for fuel. you need to give them time to recover which is why you don't want to do lifting everyday of the week.
6 to 8 between is good but next day is better - know several people who hate working out at night since it keeps them awake which is another reason to wait until the next day to do it.
I just spoke with a local competitive bodybuilder and he said to do #3 BUT reverse - AM cardio and PM lifting. While I was talking to him another local bodybuilder came in and heard us talking and he said he does the same thing.
I will try and see...
