The best way to breath is every 3 strokes alternating sides. A great breathing drill is to swim 50m and breath every 3 strokes, next 50m breathing every 5 strokes, then another 50m breathing every 7 strokes. Take a 60-100s break between each 50. It is best to approach your swimming as a real workout routine. So, start by warming up for 100m with a light easy stroke. Then do 3 sets of 50m doing arm drills, 3 sets of 50m doing leg drills. Then do sets of 100s, 200s, 400s. Then go for your endurance swim. I know it sound like alot, but it is an awsesome workout and you can continually change things up. It makes a huge difference to your endurance if you warm up first. I also find that swimming is kind of like running in that it takes a while to get into the zone and then you almost feel like you can go forever. I've been interested in finding some swimming drills, so I'm going to google it and I'll post what I find. One other thing, your swimming style can make a huge difference, so if you can, have someone assess your stroke. You can expend a huge amount of energy if your strok isn't efficient.
Way more info than you were looking for, but I hope it helps. I too have started back to swimming to train for my first mini-triathlon.
-------------- Even if you are on the right track, you will get run over if you just sit there.
