I hear different answers to this question all the time, and I want to make sure I'm doing things right to get the results I want. I want to be toned and defined, not "big". I'm a 24 yo female, 140lbs, 5'4", and work out 6 days a week. Question is...should I lift heavy weights and do small reps? OR light weights and lots of reps?

You should rotate the type of training you do ...If you're lifting weights 6 days a week then you're definitely going to be lifting lighter weight with more reps, and using fairly light volume....

I would do 3-4 weight lifting sessions weekly with 3-5 freeweight exercises per session...that cover the whole body...and I would mix up the reps to keep the body guessing.... one day 3 sets of 10 reps, another workout 10 sets of 3 reps, another workout.....5 sets of 5 reps.... generally speaking I would use less reps for the 'big' exercises as the form begins to falter after first few....but variety of training is still best....

Don't worry about getting "big" lindsay, building muscle takes a long time, building fat doesn't. Get your diet sqaured away. Diet, along with your workout will help you tone up. Diet is the main thing. Good luck!!!

Exactly, unless you're taking steroids, it's almost impossible for a female to become 'big' or overly muscular....lifting heavy will get you results....

Morning menace, thanks for backing me up.
I might be limited in my advice but usually pretty sure about what I say. It's nice to know someone agrees. Thanks again bro.

Morning indeed, on the east coast maybe LOL, insomnia on the west coast....

Yea you were right on...

just from personal experience the heavier/harder I train the more and more I need to eat to maintain my weight or make some small gains...

I'm 22yr old female about 120lbs and want to get muscular. I had a baby a year ago and lost a lot of weight, mostly muscle and I am so scrawny now and I want to look great again. I have a four day split with my weight training workout that is working well. But I want to know what my sets should look like and how to keep switching it up.

What are you doing right now?

Good to see that you are thinking in the long term though.
