I just signed up on this site and filled up my fitness plan. I checked the "want to lose some extra fat" option, but all I seemed to get in my plan was muscular exercises.

Now, I'm not an expert at exercising, but I thought Cardio exercises were the best to lose weight. When I go to the gym, I try to do at least 30 minutes on the threadmill (run 1 minute and walk 2 minutes). If it's muscles day, I do 20-25 minutes before I start weight-lifting, and 5-10 minutes after.

Can mucles really help losing weight or will you only see the difference once you lost all the weight?

Yes, muscles really will help you lose weight. Muscles require more energy and therefore boost your metabolism. When you're trying to loose weight the ideal thing to do is 3 days of cardio(~30min) to burn excess calories and help keep you're intake at a deficit + 3 days of weight training (~45min). Both your cardio and resistance training should be done with full effort and ideally on opposite days. Be sure to have 1 full day of rest. You will see a much bigger difference physically, by doing both. The FT workouts are focused on the wt training portion. I'd choose the weight loss and definition one.

Good Luck and welcome to FT!

Thanks flyonthewall! I think 6 days of training a week would be a little too much for me though...I know I'd get fed up with it and would eventually stop. 4 times a week is my goal right now.

One thing I noticed though, is that I get really sore from running on the threadmill after a while. I try to go to the gym from Monday to Thursday, and by Thursday, either my ankle or my knees will feel sore. I usually stretch both before getting on the threadmill so I'm not sure what could be doing that. Maybe my sneakers?

Yes, probably your sneakers. Make sure you get yourself some good shoes!! You could easily injure yourself and end up back at square one.

Working out 4 days a week is absolutely fine! The main think is to do whatever it is that'll keep you going!! Keep browsing around this site and educate yourself on good nutrition and exercise strategies, I find that it helps keep me motivated. Try setting some short term goals to keep focused. Also remember that diet is key as well.

Thanks for your tips. I really should buy myself new sneakers. Do you have any labels to suggest? I'm sure about anything would be better than what I have though! lol

flyonthewall, I know how dieting is important. The 35 lbs I lost 2 years ago was only on dieting. I actually have had good eating habits for a while...but once in a while I will cheat of course. I find it especially hard now that my bf lives with me... A salad is not too tempting when your bf is cooking a big burger beside you ;)

At least I try to stick with my whole grain, skim milk, and try to avoid red meat.

I will definately read as much as I can on this site. It seems to have lots of good tips. Thanks for your suggestions!

Try going to The Running Room, if there is one near by. They will help you buy the right kind of shoes. If you don't have one of those stores, try and find one that specializes in running. They will check your walking gate and make sure you get fitted properly. If you don't have any gate problems(mine are multiple) then any quality shoes designed for running will do. (I use new balance shoes)

I'm sorry, but what do you mean by multiple gate (I'm French and there are still some words or expressions I don't know about!).

Je suis désolé, I was just refering to the many (multiple) problems I have with my gate. By gate, I mean how you walk/run. My feet roll inwards when I run and have very high arches therefore I need very stable shoes. Chances are, you just need a comfortable shoe designed for running.

I sure hope that's all it is. I had never had any knees or ankle problems before I started the threadmill so that must be it. Thanks a lot and you will hear of me again! lol

Nixsta, go to the specific diet and nutrition forum and do a little reading, try and learn good eating habits. Read and start eating foods off the "grocery list for healthy eating" instead of the junk food you mentioned in your profile. Most would rather you learn how to make up your own eating plan, that way you understand it better. If you need specific questions answered just ask.
